'55 Ford V-8 Swap

I just purchased a '55 Customline 4DR which was supposedly a police cruiser originally. It's all stock with the exception of having a 312cid V8. The previous owner stated that it was common practice for state police to swap out the 6 or 292 v8 for this engine. Anyone know of any validity to this. The data plate indicates the 292 was factory.
