axle ratio stampings
I picked up a 36 rear axle, and I found the stampings on the housing rib. It shows 9-39, but an inch or so farther down there is a 2 stamped in it.
does the 2 represent anything? |

Re: axle ratio stampings
From what you have described you have a 4:11 rear gear ratio - don't what the 2 would stand for ....

Re: axle ratio stampings
37 to 9 would be 4.11. So would 4.33 be from a v8 60?

Re: axle ratio stampings
I think the 2 stamp is just a misprint. Walt

Re: axle ratio stampings
The 2 may have been relevant to something at the time, but it's meaning is not known now.
If there were an unusual ratio, they might have been produced in a small batch and then numbered. That is pure speculation and I wouldn't give any credence to it. Mart. |

Re: axle ratio stampings
Number 2 may have been the guy that stamped it. It 's hard to say what a lot of the stampings are on these old Fords. That certainly appears to be a V8-60 ratio.

Re: axle ratio stampings
According to my old Ford info, the 4:33 (9/39) ratio was an option on '33-'36 Fords. The V8 60 ratios were 4:44 (9/40) except commercial and 4:55 (9/41) for commercial.

Re: axle ratio stampings
After I posted my little math exercise in post #3 above, I got to thinking that the 4:33 ratio sounded vaguely familiar, and that sometime in the distant past I thought that I had read that it had to do with an option in the earlier, pre-'37 V8 years. But search as I may, I could not replicate that info. So, thanks for the verification, Bob. DD

Re: axle ratio stampings
Pretty sure 4.33:1 was also used in the Lincoln with overdrive. Don't recall if that was the low pinion rear though. Anyone know?
Didn't know it was an option on the earlier Ford's. Love learning new stuff. Martin. |

I agree with Walt. Look for the "Edit" button on the bottom right side of your original post.

Re: axle ratio stampings
ok, I know it came out of a panel truck, so I am sure of most of it's history. Just thought it odd to see more stamping on this on that on others.
thanks for the input guys. |
