You mean like this one? I bought it in 1955 for $125 and drove it my Sr year in High School and through college. Sold it in '63 or '64. It was my daily driver for those 7 or 8 years.

My buddy and I were very familiar with 40 Fords in High School, between us we had probably five or six - mostly just used cars. My avatar shows my '40 Coupe.

There was a rumor/suspicion/general belief among our friends there WERE a few 40 Convertible Sedans factory made. Now I'm not saying one way or the other, if there were any actual 40 Convertible Sedans, but my friend SWEARS he saw one in a junkyard in Philadelphia (where we lived) and he really was expert on 40's. To this day he will still say he saw one - black in color.

So, in modern times, there have been some conversions, but back in 1954 we really believed there were a few from the factory.

Regards

Henry

That is really snaky looking!

How about some details? Was it a 39 Convertible Sedan to begin with and not a 40 four door?

What problems did you have to solve along the way?

Thanks

Henry

Henry

funny I lived in bel air for a year and drove thru your hood nearly every weekend

my car was a clapped out 4 door

I had to replicate the front seat bulkhead and stiffen the cowl as well as the rear deck (thy I made)
the door tops were a pain and when I redo the car I'll try to make them thinner
it was a great car for many years but
now with 2 kids the need for a closed car came along luckily
I was able to get my 40 wagon done and haven't driven the sedan in awhile

firewalls are different. easy way to tell is the `40 has "dog houses" where the choke and throttle go through. the 39 doesn`t. the trans pan mounts different at the firewall and are not interchangeable.

Check the clutch linkage and master cyl/assy. If it has a lever with a clevis pined to in on the trans and a rod going to the pedal assy that would be 39 stuff. The 40 would have had a cast piece going from the pedals overf to the trans, trans would have had a clutch shaft with a flat edge to mate to the cast piece from the pedal linkage.

Don't know why. The 1939 styling is much more smooth and graceful. The 1940 grill and headlights looked tacked on -- and they are. To each his own.

You might want to check the height of the windshield against a 39 convertible sedan. It appears that the windshield may have a slight chop to it.
