Halogen bulb reflector kit, w/37 pickup lense
Years ago I installed an after market Halogen kit (reflector, turn signal and Halogen bulb) in my 37 Ford PU using the stock ford lense. My problem is there is no high beam, it's a flood light. Has anyone encountered this same problem? Is there a modification to correct the situation.
I wanted the stock look with better lighting. I sometimes drive at night in rural areas and without a high beam it could be dangerous. I'm considering going back to the seal beam setup I had before. Thanks for your input...... |

You can just buy halogen APF globes that go straight in. I did it on mine and at the same time re-wired the head lights and with relays. Shes bright enough.. In fact I have covered top and bottom of the lens to at least be a bit courteous to to other drivers..

Re: Halogen bulb reflector kit, w/37 pickup lense
There are dual filament Halogen bulbs - have some in my 32 Cabriolet. They take more AMPs than a generator can deliver - so I had Whitney rework my stock generator and install an Alternator core . . . puts out enough for these low-amp Halogen bulbs. I like the look and the lighting is good . . . and I got rid of the fugly sealed beam setup.

My 37 pickup with the same setup as yours is the same. Bright light but all over the place. I've seen posts in the past about this and it has something to do with the bulb not in focus with the lense. I don't know of a cure and hope someone will step in. I'm thinking of putting on some spotlights just so I have some light. Cheers Tony.

Re: Halogen bulb reflector kit, w/37 pickup lense
The problem with using halogen bulbs with the '39 and earlier lens is that the prism's in the lens is designed for the original per-focus bulbs, therefore there is no directed beam, the light just splashes all over the place. Some guys try to use sealed beams in lieu of bulbs behind the original lens, that does not work well either.
I have found that the best, most cost efficient way to get good lights on a '39 or earlier is to convert to sealed beams. If you want the original look then you have to have the reflectors nickle plated then glass coated, then use Ron Francis "Bright Bulbs" wich will fit the original reflectors and receptacles.

I've talked to suppliers and and manufacturers and was told there is no problem with their product. I wonder if the same problem would occur with LED's? |

Bob Drake sells some halogen designed reflectors for some years. I had some for my 36.
