59 engine weird crack.
A crack was found on the very edge of this port. Sorry about the poor picture but it’s located at the very edge near the valley and it’s about an 1-1/2” in length.
Is this something to repair? My thoughts indicate it may be repairable. Rick |

Re: 59 engine weird crack.
Probably the easiest repair on a block. You are lucky if that is the only one to be repaired.

Re: 59 engine weird crack.
Well that’s some good news.
I sold this block and buyer isn’t happy with it. With every used block you take chances and I understand his hesitancy. But I didn’t think it would be something considered to be a show stopper. Thank you. |

Re: 59 engine weird crack.
You may be able to epoxy that. Looking at it again, did it show up while porting? If so, that may be just the casting and not a crack. The ports can have this odd layering of cast iron from the casting process.
Block doesn’t looked cleaned. Buyer should have it cleaned and mag’d before investing much time in it. |

Yes he intends on cleaning it.
He was porting in the rough areas just to check around in the questionable areas before continuing and found it. |

Re: 59 engine weird crack.
May be overkill, but that looks to be a real easy stitching job. You can get at both sides of the stitching. Wish you were closer, I'd do it for you free. Check the back side real well and confirm it is a crack and not a casting blemish.

Re: 59 engine weird crack.
Great advice. I'm thinking some casting flaws.

Arc weld it with a nickel rod.

Re: 59 engine weird crack.
I look at building a block like drilling for water. No guarantee you will hit water. But you have to pay. It's a chance. Good on you.
Lot of things can go wrong. it's a bummer. But if you put a block under the microscope, you'll find something. Run the shit out of it if it pressure tests fine. Clean, mag it at least. or vise-versa. . Last edited by Tinker; 03-10-2020 at 10:10 PM. |

Re: 59 engine weird crack.
Hi all; I seen that crack before on Flatheads. The valve guide pry bars can break the area used a fulcrum. That would be opposite of the guide being pried. Newc
