pulley on 46 pickup fan belt
our 46 ford pickup has a warped bottom centre pulley, that we assume is attached to the crank shaft. the front centre of the pulley seems to have a connection in it used for hand cranking or starting the motor... i was expecting to see bolts there. was wondering if anyone has any tips or knows how to remove this crankshaft pulley. what is the correct belt size to fit on this pulley??
ps this is a flathead eight.... thanks

Re: pulley on 46 pickup fan belt
That is really a bolt for a crank, a socket should fit over it can be unscrewed, right hand thread. The pulley should be coaxed off. It should be a wide belt pulley. Just guessing with out pictures. If you need a pulley let me know. Jim.T.

Re: pulley on 46 pickup fan belt
thanks, we got it off no problem.... now were trying to find a pulley to replace it... this one is made of tin and we need a new one. the distributor is down low and a double wide belt pulley that a friend gave us from a 51 spare block doesnt fit bc the pulley hits the distributor. our crankshaft pulley is a double pulley with one pulley close to the block that runs the water pumps and the generator, and a second one farther out approx. 2.5in and it runs the fan. we are wondering if this is the standard pulley for this year(1946 ford pickup) and if it can be purchased new from any supplier.
thanks again

I think it would be possible to repop one, but not in the fashion of the original. I have considered having it cast in iron, but that would be a fairly heavy piece and balancing would have to be spot on. An alternative is cast aluminum or machined billet. Neither is going to look original but would at least provide a working part for folks' cars that need a pulley.

Re: pulley on 46 pickup fan belt
Originals are fairly common used...most need a repair sleeve over the seal area but the pulleys survive unless rammed into something while engine is out...this is generally easy to spot as on yours. The '49 up won't work because that inner pulley is too far out to clear the late sideways distributor. If you live in a bad location for old Ford fleamarkets, see if you can recruit someone down here to find a straight one at Carlisle or Hershey.
Repair sleeve # info was posted on here once...anyone have a number?? |

Re: pulley on 46 pickup fan belt
thanks for the info. I would be interested in a good used part , as well as the part # for the pulley and repair sleave.
Looking forward to some feedback for any ford fleamarkets close to niagara falls???
