Time to paint

Well I finally have the funds to paint my 28 sport coupe. What is the best way to go about doing this as I haven't done this before. I have a friend who is a professional painter and will do it for me. I plan on taking the body off the frame and I only want to do this once. Take the doors off the body? I'm lucky that it is a rust free car with only some minor dents and dings. I have already done the engine, trans and rearend. I will paint the frame and go thru the front suspension while the body is off. Thanks!

Kinda an opinionated Q isn't it? What I feel is the best way may not be in your mindset. Maybe instead tell of your goals and how you want to proceed with stripping any paint/rust first. Then let us help you with a gameplan.

Good points. What my final goal is to have a really nice driver not a points car. I guess what I'm asking is that is the correct order for painting and assembly. I am trying to make this an orderly process to save me time and money but still get a really nice result. I have all new wood and Lebaron Bonney top and interior. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

You can do it yourself and save money!!!

Take everything apart. Gas tank out of cowl, Doors, windshield, trunk lid, top, visor, interior should come out, all door handles and trim peices, everything else you can think of. Then the car should be sand blasted or sanded down to bare metal to remove all the old paint, and rust. Just remember a chain is as weak as it's weakest link, and the same goes for your paint job. You don't want to cut corners to save time or money. Just do it right the first time.

Is there a reputable place in Dallas or ft woth that does blasting ?

I just went through this sane thing. except I didn't remove the body. This car was an old restoration. I removed all the fenders, every thing forward of the fire wall, running boards but not the doors. I don't like sand blasting. I went with a process called dustless blasting. They use water and a very fin glass grit and they came to me. The panels were cooler then the out side temp. because of the water. There is no heat build up, so no warping. Also if you have not taken an A apart, take as Many pictures as you can. You will forget how things go back together. After several month, you will not remember how the welting went in and how the windshield goes back together. Don't through any thing away. You can use the old welting as a pattern. As I said, I just went through this, and if I can be of any help. Don't hesitate calling.

There are a few sand blast and soda blast companies. I've used Shotwell and sons sand blasting before and they did a decent job. They're right out of down town. I know there is a soda company that will come out and spray your car at your house/shop. But I cannot think of their name right now.

Soda blasting is a no no. To many nooks and cranes that trap the soda. And before you paint,the soda has to neutralized. Bad news on an A. Goggle Dustless blasting. There should be someone close. Works like a charm. I left all the glass in except the windshield. Used cardboard and lots of dust tape.I have sanded blasted, hand sanded, and dipped but this is the best way to remove paint that I've found. Start to finish took 3 hr.
