Default boor lock problem

Good afternoon, I took the door handles off my 31 2dr S/W to have it painted. I've been able to open the right front door by the inside handle. But when I reinstall the outside locking handle, I can't get it to turn. It's like its locked. Tried the key, that didn't help. has anyone had this problem? I don't want to take the door apart, unless I have to.
Thanks John

When you say 31 S/W 2 door do you mean a Victoria?

pretty much all SW cars use the same locking handle on the right front door. do you have an original or reproduction handle. there has to be a step or relief in the handle shaft on the locking handle and a lot of the reproduction handles do not have the step in them so the handle will not turn. when you installed that handle you should of had to turn the handle a little to get it in all the way. my bet is there is no relief in the shaft.

JW, I haven't installed my 68C door handles in several years but I don't think they use the 1/4 turn type handles. Best I remember the 2 screws that hold the handle on are what keeps the handle shaft engaged. I do know the inside handle can be pulled to the rear to lock it and this may be the problem. Check the inside lock and push the inside handle forward to unlock the door.

Sorry James, It's a 4 door. Getting old. The handle and lock worked with no problems before I removed it. I think it's going in all the way. I haven't put the screws in yet. I tried the key, but it will only turn about a quarter turn. I can still open the door using the inside handle.

How long was the handle out of the car, and was it kept in a dry place? Does the lock work when the handle is out? Can you operate the opening mechanism from the outside with a screwdriver with the handle removed?

Put a little graphite in the key slot.

I have been in touch with John and the problem seems to be in the mechanism. He tried a plain handle and a screwdriver and the latch won't work from the outside but the inside handle works fine. I suggested for him to find Kevin NJ's website and look at the repair of his latch assemblies for help. I don't know what his site address is but it can be found here under Kevin's name.
