Left and right door arm rests are both listed in the 1938 Ford body parts list catalogue
for std and deluxe coupes, convertible coupes and convertible club coupes.
Published by Ford dated February 1938.

James, I can't tell you with certainty that both rests are concourse correct in '38. A listing in a parts book does not necessarily equate to "correct" for judging purposes.
In 1940, I can tell you that two armrests were "optional" and as such are to be considered concourse correct.

James according to the V-8 Club's 38-39 book the '39 convertible coupe came with the left arm rest and the right side was optional on special order. I "suspect" this may also be true for the '38 deluxe convertible, but I could not find the answer in the book. Hopefully Al Simpson will see this post as he helped with the '39-39 book an owns a 38 convertible coupe.

Hi James, While Gary Mallast was a careful researcher, and set the bar high on the EFV8 books to follow, there are bits of information that didn't make it to the book. There was, in fact, both L and R arm rests listed in the 1938 Body Parts List:

78-702900C RH Leather
81A-702900B RH Bedford Cord
78-702901C LH Leather
81A-702901B LH Bedford Cord.

That said, there is no indication as to whether the RH arm rest was standard equipment or special order. I do know that my '38 Conv Cpe has only the LH arm rest, as have others I have seen, but that is not proof in itself.

RH ones were also needed for RHD models.

I agree with Alan on this. With no definitive proof, the correctness of a right-hand rest remains in question.
And, as a reminder of sorts... just because a part is listed in a parts book does not mean it was necessarily concourse correct.
