Default clutch - embarrassing question.

So, I took this non-running flathead/transmission apart over a decade ago, and recently had her machined and outfitted with new parts. Now come the day when I mate the motor to the trans, fresh VanPelt clutch in hand. ...and I cant remember which way the clutch disk goes on. "spring side" towards the transmission or towards the motor. And by "spring side" I mean the side with the protruding spring plate.

Thanks!

Carl

PS - please don't tell my gear-head friends at the bar that I asked.

Some clutch plates are marked "Flywheel side" you might look for that.

Mart.

Don't be embarrassed! I had to refer to the clutch section of the "Green Bible" to get mine together right. Not something I do everyday!!

Most of us learned how the disk goes by pulling the motor and turning it around. Now I always hold the disk up to the flywheel with my dummy shaft and make sure I can spin it with no interference with the flywheel bolts.

Thanks for asking because I would have been searching for the same answer soon. But, on a similar note what do you all use for alignment to get the clutch plate centered on the flywheel?

I bought a clutch kit from Mac VanPelt and that tool is included - very helpful.

Thanks again all, I'm old enough to know it's better to ask early and save myself a world of headache.

I thought everybody had an old transmission front shaft in their junk box for installing clutches!

!!!FOLLOW UP QUESTION!!!!

So here is my situation I have a big buddy over here to help me install the transmission with promises of beer and loose women (though I can only provide the beer) but I'm missing my throwout bearing return spring. Can I install that later through the inspection plate on top? ...and do I need to "proper" spring or will a hardware substitute work?

Thanks again!

I'd suggest you get the dedicated spring. I believe it will be impossible to install once the transmission is in...

I wish I did. This has been an ongoing hobby project for many years. Not something I do often enough to accumulate that assortment tools like a stub shaft. I'm guessing not just any shaft fits a 48 F3...

Put the correct first. Can't imagine being able to do it later. When I replaced the clutch in my 52 F-1 I had my new clutch and PP ready to go and after a closer look found that the TO Hub was worn. Had Mac van Pelt send me a new hub and spring. Then put it all together. Easier than doing it all over again in a month... Chap
