Default Water level

This may have been covered many times but, I am not clear on it. My 31 coupe (all stock) has not overheated, but when the overflow tube stops spitting antifreeze I can look in the top tank and see the plate with no antifreeze on it. Is this normal? I would think that some level of coolant should be seen. My overflow tube is right at the top of the neck. This is when the engine is cold. Would the level rise that much when warm?

That is what my A's do. I was told that it would find its own level and not to over fill it and that is exactly what I do. Wayne

Seeking it's own water level is about the ONLY thing that is done "AUTOMATICALLY" on a Model A.
Drop a roofing nail in the top of the overflow, it "might" help.

Dog here,
Jon, Ol' Bill tole you to drop a roofing nail in the top uf the overflow tube, It won't pressurize the system, it jist "dances" around like a Dog with FLEAS & prevents splash over into the tube. At cruzin' speed, the water REEALLY churns around in there
SO, there, I TOLE YOU SO!

If you add the same amount each time to fill it up, yes it is finding it's own level.

I was wondering about the roofing nail, I think I will check it hot and see where the water level is. Maybe then the nail will come into play.

I was not about to put a nail in my New Berg until ...I it was splashing out water on a recent 300 mile tour on steep grades. I verified No leaks or other issues just high flow from the leakless pump and splashing up to top of radiator bouncing off cap. (No leaks at cap. I figure what the heck... put the nail in the overflow and bingo no more errant discharge from overflow. Level is just below the baffle and stays there!

Putting in thermostat next week and might not need the nail, but so simple and harmless so going to keep it in.

So yup Ole Bill was spot on.

I installed a stat in mine and it seems to have helped eliminate the water loss. However, I haven't been on a long trip yet. I drove about 10 miles at cruising speed.
