Default 1933-34 Steering Column Tube

Can anyone tell me what the length on a 33-34 steering column tube is? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Dan

I'll look for the dimension but early 33's are not the same length as 34 . Light switch rod and steering shaft are also different than 34 .

The first 10,000 approx. 1933 Fords had a steering shaft 41 3/4"" long and all other 33-34 Fords are 42"long. Not sure on the tubes. Apparently those early cars the steering wheel rim was too close to the top of the metal dash panel and the fingers of your hand could rub on the dash. I read that some years ago somewhere. My cars are 34s and I have thin fingers so never a problem, Regards, Kevin.

this may be what david j has in mind. it came with my canadian 34 coupe, which has a lot of 33 features on it. its the black one on left. note there is a flat flange at the top, and not the more common flare like the brown one next to it, which is a few years newer, not sure. it measures 36 1/4. not much difference but it was enough that when installed the slit at the bottom was out farther than the boss on the steering box when the tube was up next the the steering wheel so dirt and water could get in. in my steering box rebuild of making a good box from various parts i must have ended up with the slightly longer 34 shaft. hope this helps. david j, how did i do? get it right?

My car has a Vegas box in it now with a aftermarket tube and 40 wheel. I'm switching that setup out to a F100 box and want to run original tube with 39 Deluxe wheel and working light switch. I don't have a tube but had measured a freinds 34 in his car and knew it had to be 36-1/2" -37 but wanted to verify that.
If anyone has a 36-1/2" tube they would be willing to part with I would be intrested.

Thanks Dan

if you dont care about the lock feature then you just use 1 1/2" tube. leave it straight, or make the flare like on the brown tube in my photo

you can shorten a longer tube from another year. You may have to modify the lock bolt holes slightly. I used a 37 outer column.

Yes, I have considered that as well as making a whole new tube which may be easier.

The 39 tube I have has the lock location at 8-1/4" while the 34 36-1/2" tube locates the lock at 7" so it's more then just shortening the tube which is doable but finding a original would be nice.

The 32 tube does not have the flare at the top.

You could make the flare by holding it over the edge ( maybe 1/4 to 1/2 )of a wood bench and tapping it around with a ball peen hammer ,not sure what the measurement is to the lock maybe 7"

Yes, 32 is 7" to the lock. Don't want to use a 32 tube.

An exhaust shop is your best bet. Had a tube made years ago for a '36 and they can flare the top to meet your specs.

That is definitely a option and may prove to be the best way to address the issue but in the meanwhile I'll look for a original 36-1/2" tube.
