Default Cleaning metal top & side curtain fasteners

A good friend that is not a user of Fordbarn wanted me to ask how to carefully clean the various fasteners used for both the top and side curtains on any of the open cars, such as the Deluxe Roadsters or Phaetons. He is very concerned about soiling or damaging the cloth top material, with either cleaning agents or with any type of pad. From what I understand, these original fasteners were probably nickel plated. Thanks for any input you can give!

He should be able to clean them when cleaning the top but if he wants to eliminate cross contaminants, he may have to use a wax & grease remover such as prep-sol or maybe denatured alcohol with a clean cloth to carefully work on each one seperately. Many of them are nickel plated and very thinly plated at that.

What I use and its very slow in doing is Q TIP's with a good Metal polish. I use #7 Chrome & Metal Polish made by Cyclo Industries LLC. Made in the USA. 50 year's used and still the best i think. Just be careful and take your time. Yes mine are Nickel plated too.

I've polished the ones on my station wagon by punching the right size holes in some duct tape to mask the fabric so polish doesn't get on it.
