Default Front motor mount

Hi all, I’ve been doing some tinkering on my “new” model a and noticed that the front motor mount doesnt look original. Im not sure the name of it but it is the style that has the two upper springs connected together and has rubber inserted inside of the upper springs and only rubber on the bottom. Is this mount considered a “upgrade”? I have been chasing motor vibrations and have calmed them some by setting the timing again. But could this engine mount also be transmitting more vibration to the frame than what the original mount would have transmitted?

The picture posted looks like a stock mount. Which i said i don’t believe is what i have. While looking for pictures of the mount i have I actually found a post on the barn of the mount i have but unfortunately i didnt find the post in my initial search. Here is a link to the post that is talking about the mount i have. Which is great knowledge since the issues mentioned in that post are the issues im having. Sorry for a post on a repeat subject.

Might be a Float-A-Motor. Here's another of the original style and Float a Motor after market. What year is your model A?

I just did a bunch of research on front motor mount issues, and my advice is to go buy this extremely affordable kit from Bert's and install it with your existing yoke (assuming your yoke is structurally sound). This is the correct kit to replicate the original hardware, and there's a study from 2006 in one of the magazines that tested all the front motor mount options and found the original setup to be the best in terms of vibration damping. No guarantees it will help with the vibrations, but at least you'll have eliminated this possibility.

To install this kit, you'll need to jack up the front of the engine pretty high to get the yoke to clear the crankshaft pulley. You'll also need to, at a minimum, loosen the two rear-mount-to-flywheel-housing bolts on each side. I removed the top two and loosened the bottom two. That will permit the engine to pivot.

Use caution when raising the front - on mine, I had to jack the engine up so far that the throttle control assembly started to press against the firewall.

Do the springs look like beehives? If yes, I had those. Terrible design. The springs are way too stiff and the wire connecting them wears into the yoke. Definitely go back to stock.

Ditto.

On the one I had w/the beehive springs w/rubber inserts, the rubbers were as hard as rocks, no cushioning at all.

They do look like bee hives with rubber inserts in them. I ordered the original style last night. Thanks for all the input! Ive been around motorcycles and dirt bikes since i was a child but the model a adventure is all new! The barn has definitely been a ton of help already and its only been a few months.

My son and i finally got to install the original style motor mount today. It turned into a bigger project than i was expecting since we couldn’t raise the front of the motor up far enough to get the spring retainer installed. The days worth of work was well worth it. The car has a lot less vibration now and the droning sound inside of the car from the vibrations is practically gone. Also installed a temp gauge and thermostat while it was apart.

I just did this job a couple weekends ago. Turned out to be a bigger deal than I thought too.

I ended up unbolting the headlight bar and radiator, then laid them forward So i could access the crankshaft pulley bolt. With the pulley removed, the front mount came out easily.

Did you loosen the rear motor mounts?

Apparently it is not uncommon to run onto these beehive spring setups, they must have been well advertised and marketed! I just replaced a set in a project I am building from various pieces, the engine sat too high and the rubber was hard as a rock, which seems to be the general consensus on these. Have the original setup now, all is good.

The 1933/34 design (float a motor front mount) when used with the rest of the float a motor mounts works well. It greatly reduces clutch chatter prevalent with the stock mount.

I loosened the rear motor mounts. The head of the engine would hit the firewall before the threads of the front motor mount would clear the cross member.

And when you lift the engine it tends to bend the throttle cross linkage assembly slightly. When ya get done your throttle will not return quite all the way between shifts.

Like I said it's a bigger job than ya think.

If you unbolt the yoke from the engine it will lift right out.

I think that's the case only if you have the pulley out of the way, otherwise not so much?

I had to remove the pulley to have enough room for the yoke to come out
