Default Should I buy it?

In my search for a closed car, I came across an original 1930 Murray built Town Sedan. Seller is a younger guy who has bought over $3000 worth of parts (tires, brake drums, wiring, weatherstripping). He also replaced all of the shoes, brake rods, and clevises. Original engine to the car (May 1930) started up right away despite it being very cold this morning. No odd sounds with a new waterpump, rebuilt distributor, and new wiring harness.

The wood only "needs" to be replaced on the rear passenger door where it has rotted out. The rest of it is solid and the doors close perfectly. It does need a completely new interior, a new roof, and new glass probably, among some small other things.

My idea is to keep it original because it looks really cool.

The guy wants $5500 for it but I could get to 5 grand I think. With the work in mind, would this be a good buy?

you cant go wrong at 5k

like you said, much was invested and done. if you are looking to make $, then that is another story, but if you really like the car, go for it. yes, you will put more time and money into it, but that is the joy.

Is the title clear ? Does the engine number match the title ? If so, sounds like a reasonable project car.

Just make sure the wood is solid. Check close the wood where the gutters attach.

i paid more than that for mine & mine was in much worse shape.
Different market though.. still. If you can put in some effort, go for it.

Wood was solid all around save for that one area on the rear door where a few pieces will have to be replaced.

And actually, my son was the one who found it and wants to buy it. I am the one who is not sure and wants sort of a second opinion. He says he can do all the work by himself!

chrs1961815,

I'd encourage your son to buy it and enjoy it. There is nothing certain in this hobby but it sounds like a good deal at $5K.

Sounds like a good buy to me . Even if you find a few other places of bad wood there are several ways to fix them with out replacing all the wood . I did a early 1930 Briggs a few years ago and that car had much more wood than a Murray . Just tell your son to take his time and do it right the 1st time . Norm

Correction on the wood amount I thought you had a later Murray body style . I would still go for it . Norm

I have as much fun working on my model A Ford as I do driving it. Really I do. Just one more benefit of buying a Model A Ford project.
