Re: Welding on head Bolts. Advice Needed
Both 59 and early 8BA engines (1949) mounted the oil filter canister on the head bolts. You might consider using one of those canisters.

Re: Welding on head Bolts. Advice Needed
I bought 3 longer studs from ARP, then I made aluminum spacers to raise the cannister filter ABOVE the fins, then put it all back together. Nice thing about the ARP studs is that they have a hex/allen key cut into the top, makes it easy to install/remove them. Always use some Teflon thread sealer on the coarse threads and anti-seize for the sides of them.

Re: Welding on head Bolts. Advice Needed
Thanks for the ideas.
I am now making an adapter that will allow me to mount the oil filter canister on the AMK studs # B-11051 recommended by Flathead fever earlier. That would be best as I wouldn't have to remove the head bolts to remove the oil canister. Again, I really appreciate all the time and effort you all provided to help me. Re: Welding on head Bolts. Advice Needed
Late to the dance, but another option is close to what JimTN suggested.
Find some deep, open both ends, lug nuts, OR some deep nuts for ubolts from a truck spring shop. Replace the stock head nuts and torque the deep nuts. Thread in some allen set screws so you can hold while tightening the regular nuts holding down the filter. Last edited by hotrodA; 04-08-2019 at 01:07 PM. |

Re: Welding on head Bolts. Advice Needed
I bought the AMK 7/16-14 head studs as recommended by Flathead Fever. They are the correct length with a 3/8-16 x 5/8 long stud on top. Perfect fit. Will post results later when done. Thank you all very much.

Re: Welding on head Bolts. Advice Needed
If I had a car that looked as nice as the engine you posted pictures of; I would leave it as is and just change the oil more often. Chancing removal of head bolts that have been in as long as yours have, would bother me to know end.

I've been torqung my head bolts to 45/50 lba for the past 50 years on all my builds. Re-torque through 3 heat cycles or until no movement. Overtorqing cam warp the block
