Default U-Joint

I need to ask you guys about the u-joint in my A it has side to side play that seems like too much, it is riveted also. I've checked the various parts catalogs and found that they sell only 1 kind with what looks like snap rings is this the norm now. They are all about $100. I noticed this last nite as I put the rear end in place and with the body still off the frame is seems like the better time to replace this unless I've overlooked something that might let it move side to side. It is clean as a whistle right now I saw a thread that said it should be covered in about a tube of grease, but I didn't think the grease would stop the movement. Any Thought would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

Side to side movement is normal. There should be no rotational movement. The joint should move smoothly and freely with no rotational movement/slop/slack.

If the rivits are tight and there is no rotational play it is ok, side to side is needed because both the trans shaft and driveshaft are on bearings ---the side to side is to allow for slight alignment differences.

All U joints from 28-48 are interchangeable. The 28-mid 31 are the riveted design & mid 31-48 use the steel bushings on the cross.I have always found it easy to find good used U-joints.If they are kept well greased they will outlast the car.

this is my good U joint.. I asked this question over a year ago. Make sure you pack it with Cornhead grease and lots of it.

Thank you guys this helps a lot. That side to side play in the video is what mine is doing. Is "CornHead " the brand name? What is special about it?

Corn Head Grease is the best I have used so far for the U-Joint. You can Purchase it at most John Deere Dealers. Its Viscosity is light Grease when it first comes out of the Gun or tube. When it warms up it acts like heavy Gear Oil, after cooling down back to Grease, their fore the U-joint takes a 100% Bath when you drive the Car or Truck. Remove the Speedometer Gear Housing on your drive shaft and fill the u-joint housing until it squirts out the speedo-hole. I used a whole tube to fill the Cavity.

While Corn Head grease may be great for U-joints,I have never had a problem with using an ordinary winter weight yellow chassis lube.Ive never noticed any detectable wear in any U-joint if I had the rear end out for some reason.

Do you use this grease on anything else besides the U-Joint.
