Cut outs and fields
So there was a post on field grounding regulators/generators.
How does this apply to cutouts and how to field direct generators on cutouts? . |

Re: Cut outs and fields
Tinker, maybe you should read what you have posted, because I am sure I don't understand what you are asking here. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Cut outs and fields
The cutout has nothing to do with the field...itīs basicly a relay working as a diode not letting current flow back from the battery through the generator...if it wasnīt there the generator would drain the battery on idle and when shut off.
On a 3-brush generator the 3rd brush is your voltage regulator and your hand with the screwdriver is the relay controlling it... If you want to add a voltage regulator to a 3-brush generator that can be done... |

Re: Cut outs and fields
I think you are talking about the 3 brush generators with the field ground brought out of the generator, there was a larger oval "cutout" with a voltage regulator relay inside along with the cutout, the field ground attaches to it, when the normal round cutout is used that wire is grounded

Re: Cut outs and fields
The 3-brush generators have a different field set up that the later 2-brush. The 3rd brush is there to control the current output. Voltage is set by the way the field is set up. The later 2-brush generators have to have both a voltage regulator and a current limiter as well as a cut out.
Cut outs were only there to bring the generator on line after the engine start. They functioned off the residual magnetism in the field pole shoes from polarization. The diodes that came much later are a cut out replacement that allows the generator to function but not be motored after the engine is shut down. In effect it does the same thing the cut out originally did but not in the same way. |
