You would be far better to assemble both bearings and set the preload before you drop it in place, Sometimes I have to reset the preload after I insert it in banjo.

Look inside the the case where the pinion lives there is a step there that the rear of the pinion race goes against . The front of the race is inline with the machine surface of the case in front.
