Default 59A oil pan.. what is this?

I'm trying to find out if the " channel " in the lower left in the picture is supposed to be there. This is how I found it. The picture on the right shows the relative location on the back of the pan. Thanks. Joel

I don't think so. I have my 59A pan off right now and it does not have that. There are different pans tho....

It looks like just a dent?? Did a piece of something get in between there and the flywheel at some point maybe.

I almost have to agree with Will in his assessment. DD

The channel was caused by the flywheel rubbing on it. Either the pan got pushed back or too much end play in the crank.

quite common for motors out of the car to have dings and dents in the oil pan from many moves, moving techniques, and storage shuffling. Well, at least at my house

Coop, I never heard it said better. You got a pair after all.

Will, Don't let that old Houstonite get under your skin. If he really had some smarts, he'd get em up and out of that magnet for calamity he calls home.

Definitely oil pan to flywheel clearance issue.

I know the 8BA and 59A flywheels are different, I wonder if this is what can happen if you run a 8BA flywheel on a 59A??

Dunno, just wondering.

If there is a corresponding lump on the other side, it might be ok to use. if worn thin, it might need a piece welding in before it can be used.

Do you have the flywheel that was in it? If you do, what does that show?

Mart.

Nothing like that on my C59A pan.

Bill

That was my thought initially, but there is a corresponding " bump " on the inside. I should have provide another pic.

I compared the flywheel that came assembled with this 59A to the 8ba flywheel that came with the engine that was in the truck . They are not the same. Also, the "dent " is deep enough that if it was produced from flywheel rub, it would have cut through the pan. I'll post a pic of the back side of the flywheel.

Here is a pic of the inside of the pan showing the bump . There are 2 of the flywheel . You can see where it was machined to reduce the weight. I had that done.

That bump was caused by the flywheel rubbing. The metal gets hot and moves. kind of like any dent in sheet metal there will be a bump on the other side. It's also probably worn thin in that area. I would braze it up and use it.

I would hammer it out, make a judgement of how thin it is, braze it if necessary and use it. Just make sure any braze buildup does not make for another rubbing problem.

Good thoughts Mart, bbrocksr; I can do that when I get the crank back in the block.
