1934 Starter Wrrrrrr
I had my starter rebuilt less than a year ago. Lately its been making a wrrrrr sound sometimes when I try to engage it. Sometimes it starts right up. I brought it back to the rebuilder and after checking the starter (including the Bendix) he retuned it to me (no charge) and said he thought it was low voltage.
The 6 volt battery is new and the headlights shine brightly. I suspect its one of the battery cable wires. What is the gage of these wires? Does someone make a set of them specifically for a '34 Ford where I could call them and have them sent to me? Mine are very old. Could the problem be something else? Thanks in advance. Tom |

Re: 1934 Starter Wrrrrrr
If it´s spinning free without engaging means the acceleration doesn´t overcome the little springload and friction so either not enough power, lack of lube or dirt preventing smooth movement.
When it engages does it crank fast as it should or to slow ? I would start by checking how smooth the bendix moves. Make sure the connections of the cables is good including grounding. Cables if they are not corroded or insulation is gone should work just fine. |

I think The Brillman Company has exact reproduction battery cables for early Fords (among others).

Flatheadmurre when it engages it is not slow. It starts the engine right up. Sometimes it will wrrrr 3 or 4 times in a row and then engage correctly.
