Escutcheon removal grrrr
Ok Guys
As you may know this is regarding my recently purchased 1952 F1. I followed the good suggestions on here and today purchased the shop manual. I am working on replacing the large window as well as the vent window. I am up to the part to remove the regulator handle. I tried using a small rod and hammer to knock it out. But....sigh...it's not moving. Is there a special tool or anyone have a good trick? Thanks Andy |

I'm a bit confused (chronic issue). You compressed the e-plate and are trying to remove the pin from the regulator shaft - is this corect?

I've always had luck with a lil penetrating oil and a nail, patience it'll come out

It must be rusted in - typically, there isn't much resistance. As stated above, your favorite potion (AFT & Acetone is mine) and a little time. Using brute force to overwhelm it isn't a good strategy.

Make sure you are actually on the pin. I went nuts with all sorts of tools before discovering that I was not on the pin. It slid right out once I got to the right spot.

Also make sure that the other side of the E plate is not preventing it from coming out.

Thanks guys - will try again tomorrow, let it soak tonight. It's always the little things that cause the most trouble.

Go to the Vintage Car Parts website, enter escutcheon tool, there is a picture there part #26000-tool. Hope this helps. LouB.

This 'simple' job turned out to be a real bear for me, too, when I had to replace my driver's door window. I bought the tool that goes over the escutchon plate and used a small nail clamped in a pair of needle nose vise grips. I had someone hold the door steady, pushed on the escutchon with the tool and fumbled around until I got the nail at the right spot and popped the pin out. I think I bent the small nail about 45 degrees to help with the position of the vise grips.
When I went to put it all back together I found I could not, under any amount of pressure and cuss words, get the handle, spring and escutchon to go on the shaft far enough to get the pin started. My solution was to leave the spring out. I got pretty good at removing the door panel. There's plenty of tension from the door panel and the bar underneath to hold everything good and tight. To be safe, I bought two new escutchons and used a new one on the driver's door. The original was in tough shape before I went at it and needed replacement. Good luck, you'll get it. |

I think that tool is for removing escutcheons from upholstered door panels, not to be used against steel door panels. Unless you truck has the accessory padded door panels, I don't think it will work for you. As was stated in an earlier response, make sure the center is compressed all the way around so the pin can slide out. Also, I don't remember if the pins in my '51 F-1 were tapered... If that is the case, they will only come out one way...

Vic, I doubt that the pins are tapered. Mine came out easily once I found the real location. No way I would ever be 2 for 2 randomly. LOL

Day 2 - four bent finishing nails. I walked away and am having a cocktail
I'm now thinking drilling it out. Every think is rusted all the tracks are bad and the rubber is collapsed. Since I'll need to buy all new guts. Why kill myself. I hope I can save the vent hardware. |

My golly those pins almost fall out on their own! I generally use apiece of steel clothes hanger slightly bent about 5/6" long and tap the pin out after compressing the escutcheon spring. Done it a hundred times.Works in either direction.Have a closer look there are four holes in the door handle maybe your beating in the one that doesn't have the pin. Get it?
