Ford & Mercury cars used the same basic rear axle in that time frame except the Mercury had the driveshaft as the pinion part where Fords were separate. The pre 42 cars had the narrow housing so they had the same length axles back to the mid 30s. In 1938 they changed the tooth count between the axle end gear and the spider gears so there is a difference from early to late due to that. The later ones from 39 thru 41 had 16 teeth on the axle with 11 teeth on the spider pinions while the early ones had 18 teeth on the axle and 12-teeth on the spider pinions. You can use either one but you have to have the correct pinion gears to work with the choice you make. 81A-4235 is the part number for the 39 thru 41 Ford or Mercury cars and light commercial pickups.
