31 A SW Town Sedan Window mechanism
I tried something new and applied heat to try to remove the screw that hold the window and door mechanisms. Major success. This is on my worst rusted door. With the screws removed, I retrieved the mechanisms.
Now, I need opinions. Are these window and door operation mechanism salvageable? Advise? |

Harbor freight has a nice blast booth, might think about it...your going to need one.
Once cleaned up you can judge if they can be saved. From the pics I'd say they are saveable, get rid of the rust, R&R any bad items, paint, grease, install, use.

Re: 31 A SW Town Sedan Window mechanism
I do have a sand blaster that I have used on the chassis thus far. I have a makeshift blasting cardboard booth that I have used in the past. Now, I will have to wait for good weather to return. Thanks

Re: 31 A SW Town Sedan Window mechanism
The Harbor Freight hand impact tool that you hit with a hammer usually loosens those screws with one hit.
Your rusty hardware looks salvageable and the regulators look fine. I would be inclined to use a wire wheel on the regulators rather than risking getting sand in the sprag clutch inside the gear case. I haven't looked in the catalogs lately and don't know how much SW specific door innards are available. I do know the front regulator is unattainable. |

I'd soak them in Evaporust and see how they look and work.

Tom is right, evaporust them, just be sure you clean them real good, oil and grease will kill your evaporust.
Evaporust can be used over...and over..and over...

Re: 31 A SW Town Sedan Window mechanism
Comes down to goals and budget.
The door latch is an operational item that needs to be in pretty good condition. Either soak in Evaporust or use electrolytic rust remover (google it) to clear off the rust. In fact you can rig up the electrolytic method to do your whole door with some plastic and creativity. Doors and latches are probably more available then you might think and your money might be better spent on parts in better condition. If you have looked at my website you can see the level of work I have gone through in restoring a slant, but I was also working on something a bit more rare. While there is much to be said about learning how to fix such parts. Having nice parts makes doing the job much easier. My advice at this point is to try both Evaporust and set up an electrolytic rust removal tank and learn how they work. For the electrolytic tank I recommend you buy some carbon rods. Bead blast if possible. Evaporust if not.
Those look pretty "iffy". That much rust seems to take the "spring" out of the spring sometimes. |
