1936 Rumble Seat Step Question
For the '36 5-Window, I have a '36 tail light that someone has done, what I think is, a great job modifying it to hold the spacer and step.
My question is, are the spacers available by themselves? And who might have one? From a visit to ACE hardware, I have determined that the threaded bolt on the step is a half inch bolt with 18 threads per inch. Of course they did not have such a nut for fastening the top step to the fender. Is there a spacer between the fender step and the fender? Any kind of plate under the fender where the nut goes? And again, who has one? Back to the tail light, is that spacer bolted to the tail light, looks like that would be the most secure way to hold it on? Is that spacer threaded? Thanks Gary, what are the dimensions of the spacer? How wide, how tall? Any idea how it is held to the tail light?

I have measured the right side tail light from Bob Drake and the spacer is welded to the tail light housing.
It is solid steel 1" in diameter bored and tapped for the rumble step pad. It is 7/8" tall. Hope that helps. I do not believe it is sold separately, so a spacer would need to be made. |

The rumble seat step plate is bolted to the top of the fender with a square washer on top that is curved to match the fender.
Under the fender is a square nut that is threaded to match the step and also curved to match the underside of the fender. I have not seen these available and would probably need to be made or some other method used to reinforce the fender. Thanks to Don Rogers for this information. Please keep in mind that the original 40-2454 step pad, tail light housing with stand off and 48-714026 fender nut had a 1/4" pipe thread (self tightening). This is why there were no lock washers needed.

Thanks Don, interesting that the repro steps are half inch with 18tpi. Wonder if the same step pads will fit the clutch and brake pedals.

Steve, Original B-2454 pads had a conventional 7/16-20 thread and required a nut and lock washer to hold them in place. 40-2454 pads changed the threads to a 1/4" pipe thread. This eliminated the need for a lock washer and nut. I'm guessing that thru ignorance or cost cutting, the repop houses made both pad threads with standard threads.

But still 18 tpi is not a standard size for 1/2"; more likely a Chinese version of 1/4 npt.

Typical thread count for 1/2" is 1/2-20, or, 1/2-13.

1/4 pipe thread is around .530 in diameter, depending on how far along the thread you measure - not that much bigger than 1/2 inch. What looks like a half inch bolt with 18 tpi could be the pipe thread.
There is also such a thing as nps - a pipe thread that is not tapered. |

Can't remember where I saw it, but without the rumble seat tail light, which I just bought from Drake for $65 when they had their half price sale, the step somehow is clamped onto the bumper iron.

Here are some photos of the spacer and the lock washer. Notice the 4 indentations which correspond to the ribs on the underside of the step pad as shown in Don's photos. The spacer measures 7/8" OD and 7/16" ID and 5/32" thick. The lock washer is a internal tooth style.

Was just thinking, all '36 3 windows were deluxes, and I think, all came with two tail lights, and then would have had a place for the step. Someone once told me that he had never seen a stock photo of a '36 5 window with a rumble seat. If someone does have such a photo, it would be great to see.
