Default Horn finish ?

What is the correct finish for the horn adjusting screw and the motor cover screw and the rim screws and nuts ? Are they all black paint or something else ?

Thanks

Actually the adjusting screw and cover screw are cad plated, LW plain. The rim bolts (special round head ones) and the nuts are raven finished.

31Tudor is correct. Also, the mounting bracket and the bug screen were raven finished as well.

These items were not painted and should not be today.

Hope all of this information is a big help to you.

My original 1928 Sparton horn had a painted flat screen and some of the screen holes were filled with paint. I'd guess the horn trumpet was dipped, as the horn rear cover was. There should be a round felt washer around the horn adjustment screw, and it fits between the motor frame and horn cover.

Heated, dipped in dirty oil and then satin clear is another way.

Neil,
Where does this information come from? The 2011 revisions of the RG&JS does not address this.

I found this in the standards,
Quote:
The following details apply to all horns:
The horn including the inside of the projector
assembly (bell), and mounting bracket were,
dipped in gloss black enamel prior to assembly.

The steel screw and lock washer holding the motor
cover were unpainted, blued or cadmium plated.
The tone adjustment screw was blued or cadmium plated.
Rim bolts and nuts were raven finished. Only the bracket bolts
had lock washers which were raven or unfinished.

Neil,

This is great information for the restoration of a horn and can you please tell us just where you found that information regarding the screen and bracket being "raven finish"?

Also I am at a loss here but what is your method, after the horn bell, as one might call it, is painted, just what is your method of getting that screen in place without scratching the newly painted bell?

I have tried several times but the bell always gets scratched somehow.

We would sure like to know your secret if you wish to share.

Thanks Neil.

Pluck
