39 ford waterpumps

Iam replacing the 2 water pumps they are attached to the motor mounts after taking off the nuts i was hoping the pumps would come off they wont pull off will i have too raise the motor a bit or is their some other way to get them off i dont want to pry to hard i am afraid they will break any suggestions on this THANKS JIM S.

Don't forget the bolt hidden in the water outlet.

Yes , as solidaxle said . Theres a bolt in the hose port .

i got that bolt also still wont come off my question is do i have to raise the motor in order to get the pumps off. THANKS JIM S.

I thought I found them all but took your advice and did a double check and found the hidden bolt and got it off! Thanks so much!

Jim, use only a bit of grease to hold the new gaskets in place during installation. No sealant is required, which would make it difficult to scrape off next time. Also, it's always a good idea to replace the motor mount rubber at the same time.

You do need to support the engine as the water pumps are the engine mounts.

I tried to remove mine without knowing about the hidden bolt, I stopped myself just short of prying it and waited till I pulled the engine, then spotted it....

Anti seize and a stainless bolt for the bolt inside the housing. Some will say no to the stainless bolt but I was taught by one of the best IMO so stainless it is.

Anti-seize is the key for any stainless hardware. Stainless likes to gall when coming apart so the anti-seize is a must. It's even worse with dissimilar metals than it is for stainless on stainless fastener joints.

I have found just the opposite. The only case I had with galling was when I used a stainless bolt and stainless nut. Used quite a few stainless bolts in dissimilar metals and never had a problem - including using stainless bolts on exhaust headers or manifolds. No anti-seize

Dissimilar metal corrosion is a real thing and should not be discounted and especially where moisture is in the mix. After 40-years in the aviation industry, my experience has been different.
