Replacing fuel shutoff valve, does tank need to be empty?
Hey guys! I’m replacing my fuel shutoff on my 31 model a. Does the gas tank have to be empty to do so? I see it threads right off, maybe just sneak a bolt onto the gas tank to stop it from pouring out?
Thanks!!

I just drained my tank into gas can by attaching hose to firewall fitting. Eliminates gas spills on the interior.

Yes drain it completely. Even then have a pan under it to catch the little bit remaining. You do not want gas on your floor mat. Do not screw a bolt into the drain hole. Wrong thread.

If it had a stand pipe --- pencil filter added there will be trapped gas , could be more than a gallon

I drain tank and than put an old bath towel under it before replacing valve. Enjoy.

Be careful with steel tools around the steel tank, no bumping or banging around... sparks and leaking gasoline- not a good thing!

You don't have to drain it...But I would. There are products specifically made for sealing fuel, "Fuel Lube" is one.

I drained mine by removing the fitting from the carb and extending it with a rubber hose to drain into a 5-gallon gas can. That will save you a lot of grief of you don't drain it. as stated by others, you will still get some when you actually take the valve off, so I guess I am just saying what everyone else has.

After you drain as much gas as you can get out of it, block up the RH side of the car about 4" so any remaining gas will shift away from the shutoff valve, before removing the valve.
