1933 fender/bolt question?
Hello, I am replacing fender welting/bolts on my 33 coupe, I have removed front fender, and inner fender, my question is, which way does the bolts go? The fender had the nuts on the outside, the inner fender had the nuts on the inside of the frame. One of the large struts, had nuts outside, the other inside. I would assume that ALL nuts should be inside the frame, thanks for your help.

The fender has the nuts on the out side ,inner on the inside , if the threads are pocking in you will have real problems getting the diver in ,

Re: 1933 fender/bolt question?
Based on several U.S.-built '33s that have never been apart (original paint, upholstery, top, floor mats, etc.), all of the bolt heads for the front fender brackets to frame, fender apron to frame, and front fender to fender apron are on the outside, not on the inside.
While it may have made tightening of the fasteners with all of the nuts on the inside more difficult, there is a general assembly logic to it all, namely the bolts follow the part being attached, not with the part to which it is being attached. If you look around original Fords of the period you will notice that general pattern and it does make sense. Maybe the Canadian Fords were assembled differently at least the ones sent to New Zealand. |

Re: 1933 fender/bolt question?
Perhaps the practice varied by assembly plant, but the head out approach on bolts did minimize fracturing the paint on the parts when the fasteners were tightened thereby reducing the corrosion risk for the subject parts which are exposed to road splash unlike the nuts and lock washers inside the frame which were more protected given the presence of engine splash pans.
