Default thermostat

I'm in the process of replacing the radiator in my 30 coupe, do most cars use a thermostat? Thanks, Keith

i use a stat and hold it in place by cutting an old lower hose which fits inside the upper hose... no external visible clamps needed...

It helped my car a lot. I just slipped it in the upper hose. pressure pushes it to the top and it just stays there.

I use one. It's especially good on a cold morning. Warms up in a mile or two.

I installed mine years ago and did it the same way Mitch does. I also drilled two 1/8" bypass holes.

I use this nifty little device that I got from Vintage Precision Products. It uses an "off the shelf" thermostat and has the two 1/8" bypass holes built in. Also has ports for a temperature gauge, and a hot water heater if so desired.

Keith

It's a good thing to run. I've run one for over thirty years. If you have a good radiator, the engine never gets to the optimum temperature and runs cool. The thermostat makes sure your engine runs at 160 or 180 depending on which one you run.

Yo, Kid,
You "messing" with good engineering!! On Minerva, the 160 stat would flow more water on a cold start, than you could imagine ! From the provided vent hole & "maybe " some from the pressure pushing the valve open slightly"

I agree with anything you or Tom W say because I know you guys know what you are talking about. Mitch or Tom do you have a picture of a stat that you drilled out for someone like me to see so I do it right.

Thanks
Tom F....

Thanks Mitch. Do I drill a hole on each side of the hole that's there? Is that what you mean.

With thet many holes, it's an UN-THERMOSTAT!! May as well put a CROOKEDY stick in the hose. When we were WAY poor, Chief used a LARGE flat washer, to keep the engine & our BUNS WARM!!
Poor Bill W.

Agree with Mister B 100%, my '31 ran cool even with in tropical summers. Since putting in a 160 T in a year ago, we run smooth and strong like never before.
