I think this is one of Kube's photos of the Fram cartridge filter, note the location of the oil line connections and drain plug. Plus a photo of the AC style filter

Hi Terry,OH,

Thanks for the pictures. It looks like the drain plug is located differently from the filter canister I have. It almost looks like the canister itself was rotated a bit before it was welded to the bracket. As best I can tell, the one I have has not been rewelded and looks to be just as it was manufactured. I don't think any of this will affect the actual function of the set-up, but it is interesting to consider why they are different.

I have held the bracket over the proper head studs on my '40 and it is a perfect match, so I feel confident what I have is a correct fit. As an aside, I purchased it from a Senior Member on Ford Barn who bought it almost 50 years ago, but never used it.

Best,
Borron

Looking at the picture posted by Pete, it looks like the input line fitting is for a single flare, like a copper LP gas line would use. Most all automotive applications are of the double flare type, like a brake line, to resist cracking at the flare seat from vibrations. Also, if it has not been mentioned, it needs a .060, or 1/16" in restriction in the input side.

Hi cas3,
If you look at the picture in a prior post of the canister I purchased, the input fitting that actually goes into the canister is the "restrictor fitting" with the .060" hole in it. The male and female threads on this fitting are both 1/8-27NPT. The second fitting is a 45 degree elbow with 1/8-27NPT male threads and with female threads for an inverted flare male fitting. The 90 degree fitting on the bottom of the canister has the same male and female threads as the 45 degree elbow. Based on your post, and what I've read elsewhere, I think this is what I need to make the proper line connections.

Thanks, again, for your advice.
Best,
Borron

Hi cas3,
I've tried to include pictures of the fittings. In the first I hope you can see the .060" hole. The other 2 are of the 45 degree elbow fitting. Upon closer inspection, it looks like it should be replaced which is easy enough to do. Thanks, again.
Best,
Borron

Bowen, The filter housing you'd purchased for your '40 will fit and function just fine. The differences you'd noted are simply because your filter is later, '46 - '48.

Thanks, Kube, for the information. I appreciate you answering the question for me regarding why mine was a bit different. While mine may not be an actual 1940 canister, I’m ok with it for my car since I still consider it to be “period correct”. Thanks, again.
Best,
Borron

Hi Pete,
Thanks for posting the larger pictures. I was quite pleased with figuring out how to post them in the first place. Now, I need to figure out how to blow them up to be larger.
