Default Head studs

I've been told that we should put in block studs only finger tight, in case one breaks while torqueing the head bolts, it would be easier to remove the broken stud. What do you guys thing?

I just installed a set. I applied a little anti sieze on each one and tightened them down. I don't think they should be loose in the threads.

I would use a little blue Loctite, the 242 threadlocker. This will also act as a sealant for the ones that go into the water jacket and down the road if they need to come out, it will be easier than if there was all that corrosion present.
I wouldnt use the red or green permanent stuff.
No, they didnt use that in '31...but I like "better living through chemistry", and I'm not talking about the stuff you run up your nose. Good Luck.

Use the goop of your choice.
Screw them in to the bottom and back up 1/4 turn.

Listen to Ol' Rex, Studs shouldn't be HALF ASSED loose & WOBBLIN' around in the block & with NO sealer, that might cause some to leak up under the head nuts. Then the "POOR" old owner comes on here, WHINING & trying to blame his problem on everything, from the AUTHOR of a Model A Repair Manual, on down to the manufacturer of the STUDS, or the HEAD gasket, or, "COPPER COAT AIN'T WHUT IT USED TO BE, DID THE GUVMENT SCREW IT UP TOO"? Or, "Ur them Harbor Freight Torque Wrenches ACCURATE"??
What happened to COMMON SENSE REASONING, is it out to SUPPER or LUNCH or just SLEEPING?

Studs should be put in all the way then back off about a 1/4 turn. If you leave them tight they will be chocked to one side which will make it hard to get the gasket and head on and off. When you torque them the threads will be tight in the block.

Well, to each his own, I feel that studs should be seated firmly in the block. If some are slightly off center, just twang them with a brass hammer.

Here is the last word. You can do them any other way wrong as you wish.

Well Bill do it any way you chose. But in the hydraulic cylinder business where we built up to 24" bore hydraulic cylinders, we put the tire rods in and back them off a 1/4 turn. If you tried to bend a 1 1/4 tie rod it would take a big hammer.

We also back them off in my Dads garage, and so have I. Never had a problem.

I can honestly say there is only ONE WAY to do it. MY WAY. And EVERYONE else is wrong.

And I'm not telling - nyah-nyah-nyah.

We are back to how tight is tight. I was always told hand tight and the instructions posted above seem to bear that out. "Screw studs into the block “HAND TIGHT ONLY”"

If I have a peeve with Fordbarn, it is that it tends to be populated by "experts." Some experts are truly experts. Those who have devoted their working life to servicing the Model A or those vehicles that came after. These I have general agreement with, with minor exception. Other experts are weekend mechanics, aging a bit, and now unable to accept the fact that there might be another or even a better way. Mostly these I care not to even discourse with as they drag me down.

I like the inner child analogy Bill. Life and the Model A just ain't that serious. And we need to lighten up a bit.

Myself included I might add.

Please read this to your dog. He will understand and agree I'm sure.

On second thought - just show him the computer screen. That will be all he needs.
