Default Ring gear, Old Fords are not

the only vehicle you can install the ring gear backwards in. A friend has just purchased a big ole sedan that has 4 speeds backwards and one forward. I'll be looking at it and will probably be getting my little fingers dirty soon.

Oh my, I did that when I was 16. Me and my buddy were doing something to his car and we got the thing in backwards and had three speeds in reverse on his 4 door A. I was so embarrassed, and wanted to fix it before any of our friends could see what a stupid thing we did. Not Ronnie, he wanted to drive it around the block in reverse, and he did. We fixed it REAL fast when he got back.

I tell my wife "assembly is a learning process."

First assembly you end up with it upside down and backwards.
Second assembly, you have it only upside down.
Third time is you have it assembled correctly - but something is left over on the bench.

And you learn a whole lot in the repetition.
