42 Pass. torque tube angle (stock) ?
I'm mocking up my ride ..Have 8BA/39 trans mating up to a 42 ford rear end with stock torque tube . Have the motor at 3deg for level carb, motor is mounted on the low end of the scale right now ( 4" road clearance ) like low center gravity ..
So at this motor angle /clearance scenario looks like torque tube measures 0 to +1 deg(up) for a fit up , what would the 42 stock tube angle meas. in deg.? I thought maybe at +1 deg. i might get gear oil in tube ?. Any other considerations on this match up would be appreciated .. thk/u. gus. |

You are correct, if the torque tube is running downhill rear axle lube will run down the tube toward the transmission. Keep in mind that this is on level ground, so if you park on ground that is a couple of degrees down, then so is the torque tube. If you need to have the torque tube positioned slopping downward there are seals that can be installed between the tube and the center section.

There is a seal between the trans and the rear end. If the trans fill with rear end oil, change the seal.
There are u-tube vidios on how to get the bearing sleeve out. It is easier than you think. I have a piece of pipe with a 1/4' bolt welded at an angle to engage the hole. |

Re: 42 Pass. torque tube angle (stock) ?
Great info ,thanks, since I am still in the mock-up stage of this rod project ,I think i will raise up the engine/trans for a couple deg. for a + up on pinion angle ..
I would still like to know what a stock 42 Ford torque tube degree up would be? or for that matter any ford with tube type drive ? ... thk/u. gus.. |

Re: 42 Pass. torque tube angle (stock) ?
Gus, my '41 Merc is 2 degrees higher at the transmission end. It's all stock with maybe just a touch of sag in the rear spring, which would make it a bit over 2 degrees if corrected.
