Default Fanology

Rattling water pump turned out to be a galled fan pulley and trashed key on the pump shaft. The fan is a six-blade plastic unit which nearly required pulling the radiator to get the pump out. Putting in a new pump but not sure which way to go on the fan. Pretty hot here in Florida and did not have any cooling problems with the six-blade but do not like the drill to pull the pump. Should I stay with the six-blade (which now needs a new hub) or just go with a steel or aluminum two-blade or four blade ? If the two blade will work sufficiently here I would prefer to go that route. Watcha think ?

2 blade aluminum fan is the way to go. looks right and the technology has been right for 90 years...no need to get fancy.

You drive above 30 mph and the fan - ANY FAN - impedes air flow. The two blade version that much less.

If you throw blades or break a belt, drive like the hammers of H*ll to where you'll have it fixed - then shut it off quickly - or better - coast to a stop with the engine off.

Yes, this is a little overstated - but the physics are there.

Most agree that NEW two blade fans are the way to go in cooling and safety. Original 2 and 4 blades are known to break because of the way they are riveted. The repro 2 blade fan is made of aluminum and cast, so no rivets. Have never heard anyond have a problem with it.

The main thing is to have a very good fit of the hub to the shaft. It’s a tapered joint and the two tapers must match or it will pound itself on every rotation until it fails. A lot of bad things can happen when a fan goes. Good luck.
