Default distributor drive gear spring

hi, I put on my valve cover a few days ago.
after i having read in my model a ford mechanic's book, i see the oil/dist drive gear should have spring. it was no spring there when i took out oil/dist drive gear of my engine in 2014.
can my model a engine be damaged if i run without oil/dist drive gear spring?

thanks for the reply.

Yes this is what drives the oil pump. with out the spring it will move up and down. This will let the oil come in around the drive instead of where it should come from. Plus the up and down can damage your drive gears on the cam or pump drive. It is not that hard to take the valve cover off and install the spring. You can do it with out taking the manifolds off. Henry did not use parts that were not needed.

I'll take off oil Return pipe, and valve cover tomorrow, and order one oil/dist drive gear spring.
