Emergency brake return spring
This is probably a silly question but today I was replacing the emergency brake return springs as the old ones were broken. My question is what does the spring ride against to keep tension on the spring? I couldn't seem to find any spot for it and the spring slips off the arm and it spins. Thanks for the assistance.

Re: Emergency brake return spring
All the brake rods are the same, install ed the E brake return springs just like the rear service brake rod return springs, they bolt to the same bracket on the radius rods.

Re: Emergency brake return spring
I think 31 deluxe coupe may mean the spring coiled around the e-brake actuator arm...
Here is a thread with pictures.. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=242536 Be sure to note that the springs are handed, there is a left and a right spring... .

Re: Emergency brake return spring
Get you hands on one of these and the job is allot simpler. Wouldn't do a brake job with out one.

I'm trying to figure out how that tool would be of any use in installing the emergency brake return springs. Willing to learn. Pulling them around with a wire or stout cord still seems best and simplest method. |

Re: Emergency brake return spring
I agree with JBill. Very easy to do with a piece of heavy string or cord.

Re: Emergency brake return spring
2X what 31a said. I smacked my head good when the hooked tool we had made out of 1/8" steel wire broke. Bill has it about right, the words were very blue coming out of my mouth when installing them on the car. Not bad if you have the rear end out.
There are different grades of material used to make them, the better ones are a real bitch to install. Some of the older repos used lighter gauge wire in their construction are not too bad to work with. Also the hook that has to go between the backing plate and lever, some are wider then should be and are a bear to pull thru. By the way you do realize you have to take the levers off to install.
