Default warming up

Each time I start our '55 Victoria it takes a few miles for the carb to warm up so when I stop at a light I keep the choke out so the engine won't die---probably 5 or 6 miles anyway. Are there heat risers under the carb that may be blocked, therefore taking so much time to warm up? The carb isn't the original one, it's an Edlebrock. The car runs great going down the road, I just want it to keep running when I first hit the road. Thanks

In a Y-block intake manifold there is an exhaust crossover under the carb.
Exhaust passes thru it depending on the open/closed position of a heat riser valve on the right side exhaust manifold.
If the valve is stuck open or missing that will reduce the heat under the carb for the first few miles.

Thumbs up Re: warming up

In addition to dmsfrr's excellent analogy, when using a MANUAL CHOKE, you will have to use the choke (partially) until the engine warms enough to keep the fuel mixture in suspension. A properly adjusted AUTOMATIC CHOKE does this for you.

woodrow,
Unless you're using the car during winter weather most folks leave out the heat riser valve. They can get shuck shut from rusting.
Having to remember to fully open the choke after a few miles is the nature of the beast.
I put an electric choke cover on my (12v converted) '55.
