Default timing gear

27 TT truck stop running. turns out the fiber gear had failed, teeth missing. The engine had been restored quite a few years back. The truck sat for a long time with not a lot of drive time on it. I believe the cam, crank gear are timed at the 4:00 and 10:00 position or there about? I have heard that is not timed on TDC but just before, Is this correct?

Ok this is an don't over think it moment. As long as the two timing marks are lined up you are good to go. Put the new gear on, line the marks up, put back together and drive.

Do not use a fiber gear! They will fail.

It seems that the currently available fiber cam gears don't play nice with a generator ! Older (era) macerated fiber gears seem to hold up to the generator load BUT then, I use original steel or Dan Mc's aluminum or bronze.

With gear failure, the crank and cam are likely out of sequence but most gears are marked and the cam gear can go either way as long as the marks are aligned. Backlash can be a little loose but both gears should be replaced if there is way too much. The generator can be hard on cam gears so it should be adjusted for best fit. It's a good time to check the generator for condition. A bad generator gear or a worn out generator can damage the new gear.

I ordered an aluminum gear,(Dan McEachern) a fan pulley with sealed bearings, gaskets ect. I ordered from Chaffins garage and my parts were here in 24 hrs. shipping was $22. Good service! I will check my gears for play and rotate to make sure nothing binds.

trying to figure out how I posted pics the first time. I wanted a before and after.
This weekend I got everything back together just had to order more parts that are on the way and should have the old girl running again. I did not realize that as you put on the cam gear you have to rotate the cam to make it mesh with the crank gear
