To be burned that bad I would say that the exhaust manifold is not flat with the intake meaning it is further away from the block.

If the intake manifold is not the one originally fitted to that exhaust manifold, there will almost certainly be a mismatch. By now, most exhaust manifolds have become so warped that they have been replaced. That can lead to this situation. If you have the two manifolds machine coplanar while still bolted together, I think your problems will be over.
You can do a quick check with a straight edge held against the surface that bolts up to the block. You shouldn't see any more than a glimmer of light anywhere.

They do fail fairly often, and need changing. Keep those four bolts tight.

I agree regarding … maintaining….proper torque on the four nuts (and special washers) involved !

It is worth telling that these four nuts were NOT equally tight !!
Like most opinions, I see that there are differing .. methods/numbers for manifold torquing of these four nuts.

My own belief is that an owner should periodically check and reset the manifold(s) torque, for various reasons.

Bet it was not running any gland rings in the exhaust?

I agree that the gaskets show the intake and exhaust manifolds need to be surfaced. Take both manifolds, bolted together, to a machine shop and have them surfaced creating an equal inline surface height. This will ensure an even mounting of the manifolds to the block.
