Default 1970's AMOCO adverts

An ad agency here called MOJO produced some classic adverts in the 1970's. The restoration theme seemed strong for AMOCO.

When I was real young, our local Standard Oil gas station still had all the Red Crown signage and even had a Red Crown Cafe next door. As it regressed over time, all the red crown stuff disappeared and eventually the AMOCO replaced Standard on the big sign. It's all gone now including the buildings.

They were really trying to sell the brand. Nice old La Salle too.

In 1960 a friend told me that he and another teenager were hired to go into the bulk oil station of Phillips 66 in Moline, Ill. that summer, and 'destroy all old Phillips 66 signage and advertisements.'

Mike said they opened boxes of the old orange and black Phillips 66 gasoline globes and broke them with hammers, they broke the neon signs, and trashed everything in the old Phillips black and orange colors. He said they thought nothing of it at the time but looking back today, it about makes him sick to his stomach. They filled two dump trucks full of the stuff they destroyed and hauled it to the trash dump.

A cousin that ran a Standard bulk plant near us in about 1975 had a similar experience. Standard Oil sent a Company man out to inventory their bulk plant. Marty worked with him until lunch time when they broke off for chow. When Marty came back about 1:00, the Standard man had opened 6 boxes with NOS Crown gasoline globes and broke all of them. Marty exploded, he was saving those gas globes. The guy told him he had 'orders' from corporate to destroy any and all old advertisement stuff like that that he found.

What a waste

The one ad with the horse and car is based on the famous ad "Somewhere West of Laramie",my opinion.
