1925 Pickup Bed Dimensions

Can anyone tell me the dimensions of a stock 1925 wood pickup bed? I have a '25 T with a '26 steel bed and I'm having a cover made for it, but I don't know what the difference in size is. I'm especially interested in how far the rear of the bed protrudes past the rear wheels.

The '25 Ford runabout never had a 'stock' wood pickup bed.

Only a metal bed was factory option in April, 1925. The '26 Improved Car runabout pickup metal bed overhung the chassis rear crossmember by at least half its length, the bed is 56" long.

Thanks, I didn't know there was a metal bed for '25. The previous owner installed this '26 bed which appears to be the same one in your ad above.

So to restate my question properly... anyone know the difference in measurements between the '25 and '26 metal beds?

Steve, I never actually measured the two beds for comparison, but just looking, they look the same size. The rear fenders on a 26/7 bolt onto the bed in that round recess area as yours has. I will try to go by my shed and measure the two beds and see if there is any differences between the two. Chickasha Oklahoma swap meet is coming up next month and often beds show up there. If you or someone you know is going, it might be worth looking for that 25 bed.

Yes, the '25 and the Improved Car '26 and later '26-'27 beds would be approx the same box dimensions, 56" long, 45 3/4" wide, 13" deep.

Pictures are the '25metal bed, mfg from April 1925 to July 1925.

Steve, I finally got my tape measure out and measured the flared top side and it measured 57 inches on both 25 and 26 beds front to back. Also the very top measurement across the flared part was 47 inches which is the same on both beds (width).

You guys are great! Thanks again. If you need a cover for this sort of thing, Big Sky Car Covers in Montana has a pattern and are making me one. They're even making it custom to fit the wood slats I've installed along the top of the bed.

If your fender was mounted as shown in the factory picture, with the front almost vertical at the running board, it would be fairly well lined up with the outline on the box & everything would look correct. As it is the wheel could rub on the fender in rough service - which prpbably is not an issue now.

Unless i miss my guess the body on your T apears to be The front half of a touring. That's why the revel for the fender dosn't line up with the fender.

Yeah, it does appear to be a touring body. I've been told that the factory offered them this way. Is that incorrect? Would having the touring front body mean the bed sits farther forward or back than normal? I always thought the fender arcs on the bed didn't line up with the actual fenders because the fenders were different on a '26. No?

Can you post a picture of the whole side of the truck from a litle further back?

The factory did not make trucks out of tourings but lots of private owners did during WWII since you could get more gas ration stamps for a truck.

The pick-ups used the roadster body. There is about a 5" or 6" difference between the touring front half and the roadster body. I have never compaired the pre-'26 bed with the '26-7 bed but I would think they would be the same. Anyone know for sure? Also on the '26-7 pick-ups there was a filler panel that went between the box and the body.

Here's the best shot of the side that I could find. I've lightened up the truck in the photo so you can see it better.

Also in case it makes a difference, this is a Canadian-built T. It has doors on both sides.

Caheck out this link; there has been considerable discussion on T beds before. Tmodelman has posted some great pictures of 25 & 26/7 beds -- they are different.

If you moved your box back to be even with the back of the top & lift the fenders up to the same height as the front fenders, the box would look ok. A spare tire could hide the gap on the driver's side & maybe a filler or flare box could be put on the passenger's side. Or you could just enjoy the truck the way it is!

Thanks, that's great info. I guess the only thing I'm not clear on is why the bed is mounted so far forward on mine. I thought the touring body was longer than the pickup body. Not so?

Not from the dash to the back panel of the front seat. The roadster body was longer.

I want to thank you guys for solving a mystery on my old hot rod. I never new what year the bed was. I assumed it was a Model A but it is a '25 Model T, it figures the rarist bed made and I need one.
This hot rod was built by Dave Mitchell who invented the glass pack muffler. It was featured in several magazines in the early fifties and took second place at the first Grand National Roadster show. The cab is actually a '28 roadster that was cutoff at the rumble seat and a '25 Studebaker touring car was grafted to the back of it. I'm trying to restore the car back to how it was in 1950. During the 60s somebody tried to turn it into a "Bucket T" and shortened the bed down to 32 inches (I can't stand it). I need another '25 bed or the rear sections of the bed sides so I can lengthen it back. I posted a wanted ad in the swap meet section and have not had any responses so I thought I would give this a try.
