Default Director Special heater/exhaust manifold

Is anybody familiar with these? Mine has holes that were cast and covered with sheetmetal.
I'm just wondering what they are for,

I have one of them and they are great during a COLD winter day. During the summer they will roast you and the condensor. If the sheet metal is round and on the side it is for a 'heat' bypass. It will let the hot air out the side instead of the going into the cabin.
