Electrical motor to produce vacuum...is there such thing?
As I work on my '30 Ford Roadster, I would like to use the original windshield mounted vacuum powered wiper motor and was wondering if there is such thing as an electrical vacuum source that I can use to feed the wiper motor, instead of using the engine to do so?
I will be running a flathead 59AB motor and I will be running a a 2x2 offenhauser manifold with two 97s. Is there a a source for vacuum on such set up? No real plans to ever use the wiper, simply looking to have it functional. Thanks in advance.

Vacuum comes from intake side of engine ,mount a threaded fitting in intake . Then get a vacuum tank and one way valve and mount it so it feeds your wiper , if running six volt might not fin a pump for it .

Dice roller,
Yep, the aviation industry use vacuum to drive some very important instruments, the artificial horizon, and DI( direction indicator) They use an engine driven vacuum pump with an instrument panel indication of the ‘vac’ available. I am sure electric pumps are available. Works well and even the BIG ones use it. But I would not recommend it in your application. Don't reinvent the wheel. It could be done, but why?? If using 12v later model Diesel trucks use an electric vacuum pump to operate the A/C and Heater controls.

Re: Electrical motor to produce vacuum...is there such thing?
You can use almost any air compressor, just hook up to the intake side instead.
You'll need to do some fabricating of course. Don't forget that air compressors and vacuum motors tend to run noisy, unless you use something like a centrifugal pump, but they don't produce much pressure differencial. To run a vacuum wiper, you'll need a decent pressure differential and some decent volumetric flow. In other words, ya gotta do some math and empirical testing to make it work right.

Perhaps an electric wiper motor would solve the problem.

Re: Electrical motor to produce vacuum...is there such thing?
Gm used a plastic tank back in the 70’s I believe. It was designed to hold the vacuum when the engine wasn’t producing enough. That’s when they were using vacuum to run all the defrost, inside and outside air doors for the ventilation system. You could try using something along those lines to store the vacuum for the wiper motor and you could hide it under the body no one would be the wiser.

Re: Electrical motor to produce vacuum...is there such thing?
Thank you all for your replies
An electrical motor is not really an option. I want the look of the original wiper motor. I doubt that I will ever use it; however, I would like it to be functional. Truckerjim got me thinking....I do have a vacuum port at the base of the intake manifold that is currently feeding the advance in the distributor. Can I potentially T off that and feed the wiper motor?

with a flathead and 2 carburetors I wouldn’t worry about the authentic look of the wiper haha !

Re: Electrical motor to produce vacuum...is there such thing?
Later flatheads ('51-'53 I think) had a fuel pump with a vacuum pump on the bottom. Would be a simple swap.

On my old old Tudor I ran a small 12V electric vacuum pump from a diesel RV and a reservoir tank. Both lightweight and inexpensive.

Unfortunately it is very rare to find a Stromberg with vacuum ports. I ran into the same problem with my Y-Block. I have three vacuum taps, Power brake booster, vacuum modulator for trans and vacuum advance. r Last edited by Y-Blockhead; 09-23-2020 at 01:19 PM. |

Re: Electrical motor to produce vacuum...is there such thing?
Yes, there was period correct 6 volt electric vacuum pump, built by the same manufacture, Trico, of the vacuum wipers. They work great. You might want to read through this post:

What about drilling the frond manifold riser to match the rear and put a port there

Re: Electrical motor to produce vacuum...is there such thing?
Dorman makes the 904-214 vacuum pump for a reasonable price. You might check and see if that will work. The one from Jeggs is around $130 so it isn't cheap.
Keep in mind that the standard V8 type generators for the 59 series V8s are only 35 amp capacity. If you run an alternator of 40 amp or better then it shouldn't be an issue. |
