I have been delinquent in doing anything on the panel for sometime until last month. I managed to put new head gaskets in and now have the engine in the frame and much is hooked up. While waiting for some parts I ordered I tore my starter switch apart as it was frozen with Rust. I know new ones are available but I enjoy some tasks just for the challenge and satisfaction.
Drilling the plunger to get things apart, I ground it off, drilled it and made a new end post for it. I stretched an extension spring to make a new compression spring. It is a bit stiffer but will work. The cardboard insulation was shot so I used some hard rubber. All the copper parts were still good. The last photo shows how I compressed the spring for assembly and re-riveting. The 4 corner tabs were heated to relieve stress and then bent over. Finally I painted it with silver Rust-Oleum and let the sun bake it at 80 degrees or so.
It kept me out of mischief for 4 days and now the other parts are here.
I hope to have further progress to report soon.
Rich

While I'm at it I have questions about three holes in the intake manifold. I'm guessing the threaded one might be for a vacuum wiper. The other two don't seem to go to threads. Are these for manifold bolts and stripped or something else? I have been an amature mechanic for 55 years but haven't worked on Early V-8's that much
Thanks
Rich

Hey Rich....The two blank holes closest to opposite ends of the manifold are 'locating' holes which fit over two raised pins which protrude out of some, but not all flathead block intake surfaces. If you look carefully, you can see that front pin sticking-up out of the upper, flat surface of the block pictured. There is another pin sticking up out of that same surface toward the rear, and on the opposite side of block.

That threaded hole just about 3" farther forward is a vacuum source that is generally used for windshield wipers. There is a similar, threaded vacuum hole farther forward on the same side of the manifold. Your picture shows IT to already have a brass fitting threaded into it with a vacuum tube heading forward toward a distributor connection. DD

Since you re-posted the pictures of my truck, you might like to see it complete with lettering and striping.

As for the ugly green thing, I put a battery in it and tested the new switch. Not only does it work but after pouring a little gas down the throats the engine fired. I guess you all know that thrill.

Great to hear of your progress, what a thrill that is when they start for the first time in how many years?

Well, I've had the vehicle for about 50 years but didn't have a workable motor until a Street Rodder friend gave me one he took out of a running '36 so he could put something more modern in. That would have been a dozen years ago. I have enjoyed having it and have used it for props for photos and this painting which I used for a Christmas card several years ago. I called it "Birds of a Fender" or "Fenderbirds". Today I started going through a pile of carburetors I picked up over the years.

Max, that is a very beautiful painting! Dangit, we have some amazing talent on this site! I have a '47 panel, but it's just a beater compared to the two seen on this thread! Keep at it.

Thanks. As for beaters, this is and will remain one. I had visions of making it as nice as Don's but that won't happen. The panel was rolled in the 40s. The frame was badly bent so I will mount it on the good frame I have. The doors still open and close but it will be an ongoing project to straighten many areas. It is covered with a collage of colors from various paint jobs. Since I have some presentable restored cars I am now trying to build ones that look like barn finds but are mechanically sound. There are many ways to enjoy these.
