Default Front cross member hole

My friend has a 1930 sport coupe that we are putting a rebult engine in and the hole for the engine mount looks big. What size hole would there be in the front cross member for the front engine mount yoke? I know it gets a washer and spring, but is there a little wiggle room, or a snug fit? Thanks

A shouldered brass bushing also goes in the hole.

I measured a couple of them and looks like about 7/8". The bushing was deleted in Feb
1929.

Check the hole to be sure it isn't rusted thin from a leaking water pump. If it's real thin on the edge of the hole, then the easy fix is to weld a washer around the hole. The harder correct fix is to weld and grind, to bring it back to the correct thickness.

Thanks Bob, our hole is about 7/8 inch. A friend said the service bullitins say 3/4 inch. Tom, the wear looks like it is from movement of the yoke not water. The steel seems thick. Thanks again for the help.

If your frame is bent, you'll get side wear on one side only

Interesting, I have a spare front cross member that is worn just like that.

May not be right but we install the brass bushing in the later cars too. Just helps keep things centered using the original yoke.

Bob, do you have a page in the Service Manual notes where this deletion is mentioned?

It's on page 1-3 of the Restoration Guidelines & Standards.

It is also listed in the service bulletins. Probably dropped to save 5 cents.

Do you have the page number, I couldn't find it. I couldn't find anything
in the Service Letters either.

Hello, Bob;

Thanks for that reference. (Actually, page 1-4)

That section does raise a question.

The first support was ".. forged three-point engine mount ... utilized a brass bushing ..."

"In February 1929 the front end support was changed to cast steel. ..... thereby eliminating the brass bushing."

It then goes on to say "in August 1929 the forged support was reinstated and used to March 1930, when it was replaced by a steel stamping.".

What is not clear to me is when the "forged support was reinstated", did it also imply that it "utilized a brass bushing"as it had previously?

I also find continued reference to the brass bushing in the Service Bulletins that have to be later than February 1929.

Perhaps this is clarified in Rev 4 of the JG, I don't have it (yet).
