Another about light switch rod
Obviously want to go the easiest route on trying to change my light switch rod. I have a '28 Coupe, is there a way to lower the column just enough to get rod in and out inside the cab so that the column doesn't have to be completely removed? In the photo couldn't I just remove the bolts from the frame and let the column slide down about 8-10 inches? Thank you for suggestions and pointers in advance.

From the picture I can see you have the 2 tooth box, which is 1929 and later. You'd have to remove 4 nuts to remove the sector from the box, but I think you'd be better off to just remove the complete column.

If it wasn't for the #!%##!! cotter pins, your weekend would not be so ... tough. The three cotter pins grouped at the Pitman arm and the steering column-to-frame connection are (IMHO) proof that Mr. Ford really did not like us much. They will probably make you cry and will surely make you bleed.
That said, take the column out and spruce it up. You can install a tube-type steering housing end plate to get rid of some mess and tune up the steering wheel play. While you are at it, consider drilling a 1/8" hole on the bottom side of the steering column about where it is clamped to the tank. Spray some silicone spray in and let it dry. Then squirt expanding foam (like Great Stuff) in and let it set up. That trick worked to get a nasty screech out of our Roadster's steering. A couple coats of Tom's favorite Rustoleum will incent you to beautify some more of the car. Just have BandAids in you tool box before you start! |

remove the brake and clutch pedal, the pitman arm, the steering column clamp at the gas tank inside the cab, unbolt the 2tooth at the frame, then invert the box 180degrees and then pull the column. Reverse to reinstall. I would also go thru the steering box after all that work, and readjust it on the bench before reinstalling. That box looks like original to the car, although you say the car is a 28. Hope that it is a gemmer. replacement parts are not available for the ford box to my knowledge.

Thanks for the inspirational post Bruce. Hey Mitch can you PM him and tell him how lame I am . Tom, does that mean I have a '29 and not a '28 or maybe the column was replaced at some point? I have wondered if this was really a '29 but the stamp on the firewall says 12-12-28, hmmm. That really adds to my angst.

When you get the column out and on the bench you will see gemmer on the housing.
If there is no gemmer it is ford. Bob |

Re: Another about light switch rod
The first 2 tooth steering came out in February 1929 and my 2-23-29 Tudor has the Ford 2 tooth in it.
We need more clues to date your car. Do you have the SERVICE BULLETINS? The SB and the Judging Standards are two good books for information and to date your car. |
