Default What year is my engine?

VanPelt says a 1939-42 block has three openings between the center cylinder bores, top one is triangular and the two lower ones are trapazoids. A 45-48 block has the top one triangular and the two lower are round holes. This block has a triangle on top, circle in the middle and trapzoid at the bottom. Any help?

Looks like a Canadian made C59A.

Thanks. Do we have a date range that it might be? I’ll take a look for that casting location.

The "59" indicates 1946-'48 production. DD

Canadian engines will have the casting number with C prefix. Prewar 95 hp 239 blocks and wartime 239 blocks have the same deck configuration. There are casting differences between the early 39 thru 40 239 blocks and 41 thru wartime 239 blocks. If it's a truck engine then it will likely be a relieved type block.

Canadian early 239 blocks have a little 99 casting number on the front right if I remember right. US made early 239 blocks were stamped 99 on the front right intake deck. All pre 1941 engines have sand clean out ports on the pan rails. 1941 & later have no clean out ports and have what appears to be a raised intake deck.

My guess is that it is a 39-42 239 CI engine - given the round center hole. Does it have the core-sand cleanout plugs on the pan-rail and a "raised" intake deck surface? Take it a bit further apart, clean it up a bit and we'll be able to tell you more. I have a very similar engine in my 32 Cabriolet.
