Default 1939 Deluxe mystery wire

Out of the cowl harness is a yellow/black wire with a closed end that attaches somewhere. It is a "'hot wire" See pics..
Images of the generator and solenoid wiring may be helpful as you ponder.

Thanks!

Phil

Could that wire be BG, if so it will power the oil. temp and fuel gauges. It would be coming from the IGN switch.

The wiring diagram shows a yellow black wire leading from the junction of the black wire from that connects the battery to the charging circuit, with the other end feeding the ignition switch. That junction also connects to a large yellow wire that leads to the ammeter.

You can see them at the starter solenoide.

My '39 CS is a DeLuxe, with the voltage regulator, it has a yellow/Black wire coming from the harness and going to the Armature post on the voltage regulator however, the OEM style harness I installed, looks different from the one in your photos.

Does your oil pressure gauge work with that wire disconnected? I think the wire goes to oil pressure switch.

I think Vic has it. That wire looks like the VR wire because it is thicker than a sending unit wire.

Wires to the gauges would not be hot.

I thought the oil pressure sending unit provided a variable ground to the gauge. Seems that hooking a "hot" wire to the sender would be a direct short. JMHO

The wire to the sender is live if tested with a voltmeter.
If its a KS its pretty close to batteryvoltage to.

'39 schematic shows BY wire from sender to panel gage which is fed by switched BG wire.
Looks like it goes to oil sender which is obviously devoid of a wire in your picture.

Show a picture of the voltage regulator. Does it have all the proper wires? That loose wire is large and for heavy current. I think it either should go to the vr or it belongs under the dash and someone pulled it through the firewall.

The ground end (sender terminal) of a gauge will show voltage unless grounded. Does the wire in question show voltage only with the ignition on, or all the time?

Seems to be some confusion as to the size of the wire.
Mainly because the terminal end is closer to the camera giving that illusion.
Make a comparison to where the wire is closest to the sending unit.

We believe the wire does goes to the oil pressure sender. It only has current with the ignition on. The schematic in post 14 shows a BY color wire but the wire in Phil's harness appears to be more YB which may have led to our confusion. The Voltage Regulator has the correct wires and the car did start prior to installation of a crab distributor. We are working on new plug wires as time permits and haven't been able to verify that the oil pressure gauge works. Thanks to everyone that has responded and Phil will provide an update once the plug wires are installed and the resistance checked. We live in separate towns and don't get to work on Phil's car as much as possible. Bob

One could look under the dash and see what color the wire is on the oil gauge.

Thanks to all who weighed in the mystery wire. It was the wire to the oil pressure switch which now works after we got it started. Cecil had an excellent tip in checking which color wire was attached to the gauge under the dash.
