Default Grease Oil Steering Box

Why can't you mix grease and oil together to make your own slurry for the steering box?

Minerva was pumped partly full with a "clear" grease. Apparently pumped in from the fitting at the bottom. Topped it off with Valvoline Synthetic 70-90 & it gradually got EASIER & EASIER to steer & DIDN'T leak! I kinda' stirred it, with a skinny welding wire.

I have been pumping in synthetic chassis grease followed by a few ounces of synthetic hypoid gear oil since 1962 without any ill effects, and it doesn't leak!

I recently restored a 2-tooth steering box with all of the sealing gimmicks on the market, and it leaked. So I put grease into this box too!

It was kinda a loaded question I have been doing it for four or five years, but I have not seen it recommended when people ask "what to use in steering box?"

We know what is correct and you can buy it.

You can try anything you want, but is it what it needs?

In the '50s, we put a fitting in the filler plug & filled it with chassis grease, mixed with STP.
Did this on my '32 & lubed all the DRY fittings, with the same stuff---Then, DAMIT, it started to SHIMMY!--- Chief sed, "I tole you so, you wouldn't LISTEN, as USUAL"!! He DIDN'T mince his wurds---LOL

Kevin this is the label on the 600 oil from a vendor, supposedly it is the correct stuff.... As along as it has the modern seals. I just make it a little thicker with grease.

Some oils and grease won't stay mixed.

One nice thing about the 600W leaking out overnight after you fill the steering box is, you never have to flush out the S.B. to clean it The 600W in my garage floor drip pan was always as clean as what was in the bottle.

Maybe I should have just been pouring THAT right back in.

again here is a viscosity chart. ISO 680 is equivalent to SAE 140 according to the chart.
The challenge is to find SAE 250 or above.
